Awaken. When Paul wrote his letter to the Romans, to quote Queen and Bowie, he was “under pressure.” Written in the wake of a pogrom against the Jews in Alexandria (38-41 CE), he was keen to avoid another outbreak of violence against their cousins in the Abrahamic faith tradition. Paul exhorted Christians in Rome to stay awake, to live into each moment as followers of Christ with everything that entails. Paul writes with urgency. To him, we must stay awake because Christ’s return is imminent. Salvation is right around the corner. Brothers and sisters, In this season of Lent, let us adopt the urgency of the early church. Let us awaken to the issues of our time, let us awaken to people different from us, let us awaken to Christ’s call and all that it entails. Who knows? Salvation could be right around the corner.
“As you do all this, you know what time it is. The hour has already come for you to wake up from your sleep. Now our salvation is nearer than when we first had faith. The night is almost over, and the day is near. So let’s get rid of the actions that belong to the darkness and put on the weapons of light.” (Romans 13:11-12)
