Yesterday marked the end of the Spring semester at Union Presbyterian Seminary and, following two short terms over the next six weeks, my second full year of seminary will be complete. Coming to seminary was an unexpected journey for me after over 25 years in a full-time career in non-profit advocacy. Now, almost two years after that hopeful but nervous step, I have experienced God’s blessing in so many ways, including rigorous and rewarding study of Bible, theology, and christian education, and varied ministry opportunities within the seminary community on campus as well as in the city of Richmond. But my greatest gift has been the warm and constant fellowship of my ministry colleagues, including my fellow classmates, and faculty and staff who demonstrate daily their commitment to offering support and encouragement to one another in our shared community of faith. The refrain of “You got this!” spoken by my friends in Christ has made the difference, not just during this frenzied past week of final exams and papers but also during those moments when I’ve wondered “Am I doing it right?” and pondered where the road from seminary will ultimately lead. And I know I’m not alone in believing in the power of our connections. The comradery we have experienced here will forever serve as the foundation and template for all our work in ministry, no matter where our unexpected journeys with God takes us. Together, we got this.
“So continue encouraging each other and building each other up, just like you are doing already.” (1 Thessalonians 5:11)
